Viewed wins 2008 Melbourne Cup

Australian trainer Bart Cummings won his 12th Melbourne Cup on Tuesday when his 40/1 priced entry, Viewed, came out of nowhere to clinch Australia’s biggest race by a nose.

A horse that had been off the radar before the race started took the lead late in the race and refused to give it up, even as Luca Cumani’s Geelong Cup winner Bauer challenged for the win.

“Someone told me I do make a habit of winning this race and I said it was a good habit to get into,” Cummings told the media after the race. “I feel very sorry for Luca Cumani as the runner-up, but it’s great to see the Aussies succeed. I thought it might have been a dead heat it was that close.”

An Australian entry also took third place, with C’est La Guerre coming home after starting the race at odds of 20/1.

Ireland’s Aidan O’Brien, who had three entries in the race, left Flemington Park empty-handed after Septimus failed to make an impression finishing the race in 18th place, while Alessandro Volta finished in 20th place and Honolulu came home last.
