The warm summer weather, elegant fashion and excellent betting opportunities make a trip to the Melbourne Cup an experience not to be missed by any serious racing fan or punter.

Melbourne Cup Travel by Car

Due to the massive crowds attending the Melbourne Cup it is inadvisable to travel to Flemington Racecourse by private car. If you wish to transit by car make use of a taxi, as dedicated taxi ranks are available close to the major entrances to the racetrack. Shuttle busses are available from Epsom Road to the various entrances of Flemington Racecourse on race days.

If you’re travelling in by car from another Australian city, keep in mind that you are looking for a minimum 7 hour journey (Adelaide). Bus services from out of state are offered by Firefly Express and Greyhound.

Melbourne Cup Travel by Train

Travelling by train and tram is probably the easiest and cheapest way of commuting to the Melbourne Cup. Flemington Racecourse is serviced by its own railway station, Flemington Racecourse Railway Station. The station is only open on race days and provides easy access to Melbourne park from Flinders Street Station on the Metlink train service.

To get to Flinders Street Station, Melbourne Cup travellers can make use of the free City Circle trams that transit the perimeter of the central business district. Trams run ever 12 minutes and are easily identifiable by their maroon colours.

Melbourne Cup Travel by Plane

Melbourne is serviced by Melbourne International airport, 22km north-west of the city. The airport provides connections to a host of major international carriers and local airlines. If you’re travelling into Australia from Europe or North America you’ll need to keep in mind that flights are usually routed through major Asian Airports making for very long travel times.

Travelling from the Melbourne International Airport to the city centre can be done by either taxi or bus. Taxi rides from the Airport into town are affordable, however Skybus is the preferred option for many Melbourne Cup travellers as it offers a 24 hour service seven days a week with cheap fair and a drop-off point at Spencer Street in central Melbourne.
